BOOK SUMMARY FROM GOODREADS
She’s a soldier.
Noemi Vidal is seventeen years old and sworn to protect her planet, Genesis. She’s willing to risk anything—including her own life. To their enemies on Earth, she’s a rebel.
He’s a machine.
Abandoned in space for years, utterly alone, Abel has advanced programming that’s begun to evolve. He wants only to protect his creator, and to be free. To the people of Genesis, he’s an abomination.
Noemi and Abel are enemies in an interstellar war, forced by chance to work together as they embark on a daring journey through the stars. Their efforts would end the fighting for good, but they’re not without sacrifice. The stakes are even higher than either of them first realized, and the more time they spend together, the more they’re forced to question everything they’d been taught was true.
WHAT I LOVED.
I got SUCKED IN BY THE PRETTY BOOK COVER!
WHO CAN RELATE.
But also I am always looking for love stories in space! Or a ragtag crew of criminals soaring through space, like a leaf on the wind. Anyway, I thought I’d give this a shot but uh…meh. I did enjoy how it showed a lot of different sides of this war they’re fighting. A bunch of different characters that represented different viewpoints; two different kinds of rebels, one extremist and a moderate, those who think that Noemi’s homeplanet is in the wrong, and those who think that Earth are the bastards ruining everything. That was cool, you don’t usually see that.
I thought the characters were strong, Noemi has a clear goal and she’s a little BADASS BABE. I always find sassy AI’s incredibly delightful so I loved that part of Abel. I…guess that’s it. Honestly I didn’t really like one WHOOPS.
WHAT WAS MEH.
This is probably on me but uh….I am not 100% on the plot for this one. I know what HAPPENED but I’m not sure about the particulers. It’s possible this is why I didn’t really care for this one, but the story didn’t hook me from the beginning.
Also since I listened to the audiobook it took me -erm- longer than I’d care to admit to figure out that the character’s name was Noemi, and that the narrator wasn’t just saying “No, Emmy!”
I found the narrator for Abel a little annoying through because it was so robotic and I get that that was his intention but I STILL FOUND IT IRRITATING?
I DON’T KNOW. By all accounts I should have LOOOOOVED THIS BOOK. BUT. I didn’t and I’m not sure I’ll read the second one when it comes out. I have such a long TBR I can’t be wasting my time with things that don’t crack into my heart just a little.
WELL. Apparently I draw the line at sexy robots. I get that Abel is supposed to be a hottie with a robotic body, he’s got the parts and he’s READY TO USE ‘EM BUT LIKE. HE’S A ROBOT? I mean…OKAY. SO.
I MIGHT BE A LITTLE BIT BIASED BECAUSE MAYBE I’m a little bit terrified of an AI ROBOT TAKEOVER?! Which is not totally ridiculous you now, Elon Musk also fears the robots so this is obviously very normal and maybe YOU should ALSO FEAR THE ROBOT UPRISING. Or at the very least be prepared for it. Store some crackers in your purse or something in case you need to go hide in the sewers from them…or whatever.
ANYWAY MY POINT IS that I guess I just can’t get over the fact it would be like having sex with just a really high tech vibrator (YES I KNOW ABEL HAS A SOUL AND FEELINGS AND STUFF. BUT HE ALSO GIVES OFF BORN SEXY YESTERDAY VIBES AND I CAN’T EVEN WITH IT.)
(Highlight to read this bit!)
WAIT WHY COULDN’T ABEL COME DOWN WITH HER TO THE PLANET? Ugh forget it, it’s not important. Just seems like….not necessary
WORTH THE READ?
I don’t wanna be a bitch about it…but nah. It wasn’t for me. But if you like space-capades and feel okay about being thirsty for some robot peen then BY ALL MEANS GO FOR IT.
IF YOU LIKED DEFY THE STARS YOU MIGHT LIKE…
Starflight by Melissa Landers – So this is more like a “I think you should read Starflight INSTEAD of Defy The Stars” because I think Starflight kinda brought everything I was hoping I would get in DtS but didn’t get.
Starflight even made one of my TTT lists, Top Ten Favorite Books of 2017.
