Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

WHEEEEEE!!!!! So despite this book only coming out a few weeks ago, I somehow feel like it’s been on my TBR for MONTHS. In any case I was so ecstatic to find it in my OwlCrate box for January!!! I was ESPECIALLY pleased because this is only my second box and I didn’t like the December box, but when I opened it and saw that BEAUTIFUL exclusive cover I actually YELPED WILL GLEE!
On Friday I was like AH WELL. MIGHT AS WELL START IT. And then I don’t know what happened, I must have blacked out but six hours later I had finished it and was angrily trying to google my way into time travel to figure out how to get MY HANDS ON THE NEXT BOOK GODDAMN IT YOU KNOW IT’S RUUUDE to write books and then make a person WAIT for the next one. I know that’s the normal practice but that doesn’t stop it from being R U D E.

I also haven’t actually read a physical book in a LONG TIME. I didn’t realize how long until I was upside down on my bed, trying to keep the book from falling on my face and thinking to myself “HOW DID I EVER READ BOOKS BEFORE?!” But it felt so nice, kind of like being 16 again and trying to read through the night. AWWWWW.

I like how STABBY everyone was! EVERYONE GETS A STAB! WHAT FUN.
I love how nobody is really a GOOD person and everyone is a lil tricky bastard! That’s why I LOVE stories about Faeries, because they’re so manipulative and devious. What are they gonna do, what do they want? NOBODY KNOWS! THAT’S THE FUN!

All the aspects of this world are dark and enchanting, like the food and the rivers and the war games tournaments! Even though it’s dangerous and she doesn’t fit in…I completely understood why Jude wanted to find her place in that world.

SPEAKING OF JUDE. I love her. She’s a scrappy little Slytherin who’s had ENOUGH, AND SHE’S NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE! Jude knows what she’s good at – spying, lying, and stabbing jerks – and she’s going to hold onto that at all costs! GOOD FOR YOU GIRL.

I’m also OBSESSED WITH MADOC?! He’s made for war, but he loves his family?? He murders Jude’s parents and then WHISKS her and her sisters away to give them a life in the High Court of Faerie. A LOVELY LIFE. They have nice things and he loves them and PROTECTS THEM AND TEACHES THEM HOW TO FIGHT AND STRATEGISE???? He has his own sense of honor and loyalty and it’s not GOOD but it’s HIS?! Also I’m imagining him as like a Ken Watanabe or like a Daniel Craig or something SO HELLO HOTTIE WHATCHU UP TOO? Oh some murder and betrayal and stuff? Cool cool cool, HIT ME UP LATER LET’S SNUGGLE OR WHATEVER. KTHNXBYE.

I love that Jude is revving up to be this like GAME OF THRONES POWER PLAYER, and it’s not fair for me to be annoyed that she wasn’t immediately a little mini Cersei but I uh…was. ONLY BECAUSE I WANT JUDE TO SUCCEED IN ALL THINGS. And if that were the case it would have been boring I guess but whatever. I WANT WHAT I WANT.

I did find the writing style sometimes odd, and a little confusing. Especially when Jude breaks the fourth wall and says things like:

“So here are three things I should have told you about myself before, but didn’t”

It’s not a big deal, it’s just….a personal annoyance, something that makes me squint my eyeballs whenever I see it.

I do have one thing that I’ll pop into the SPOILERS section, but HONESTLY?! I guess I don’t really think anything was MEH. This was a great first installment and I NEED THE NEXT ONE AND ALL OF THE ONES THAT COME AFTER THANK YOU GOOD-BYE.

Except wait this review isn’t done yet please don’t leave yet.

WELL WELL WELL. Here I am. Feeling things for Prince Cardan. SURPRISED?! CUS I AM NOT.
Oh sure he’s a tragic little Princeling, and has his own issues besides being a big bully. That’s to be expected, but the thing that endeared him to me the most is that he was heartbroken over Nicasia. Poor lil dark haired nugget. He’s not even a particularly gifted strategist or swordsman he’s just like “CAN I PLEASE JUST BE AN ASSHOLE IN PEACE?! IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK.”
Look I am 100000% not okay with the “I like you so I’m mean to you” thing, but it…wasn’t really THAT. They don’t even LIKE each other but they’re drawn to each OTHER? CAUGHT IN THIS STRANGELY SENSUAL POWER STRUGGLE THAT I CANNOT LOOK AWAY FROM.

(Highlight to read this section.)

So you can all spot that Locke business a mile away. As soon as he set his twinkling eyeballs on Jude I was like OOOH. NOPE. I DON’T TRUST THAT ONE.
But one thing I will ALWAYS HATE is pitting sisters against each other for the same man.
Like honestly, that can trope can vomit its own butt out of its mouth and DIE.

Also that ENDING. I’m so pleased Jude’s plan worked out! I LOVE IT WHEN A PLAN COMES TOGETHER. But something I didn’t see coming was Cardan’s reaction! He’s so just “You wanted it, you got it. I’m just gonna be drunk.” AND I LOVE IT?!?!?!?!?!?!

YUP. DO IT. DO THE THING. Then come over to my place and we will drink some wine and say things like, “HER DRESS HAD FUCKING POCKETS FOR POISONS AND WEAPONS!!!!”
