BOOK SUMMARY FROM GOODREADS
Farway Gaius McCarthy was born outside of time. The son of a time-traveling Recorder from 2354 AD and a gladiator living in Rome in 95 AD, Far’s birth defies the laws of nature. Exploring history himself is all he’s ever wanted, and after failing his final time-traveling exam, Far takes a position commanding a ship with a crew of his friends as part of a black market operation to steal valuables from the past.

But during a heist on the sinking Titanic, Far meets a mysterious girl who always seems to be one step ahead of him. Armed with knowledge that will bring Far’s very existence into question, she will lead Far and his team on a race through time to discover a frightening truth: History is not as steady as it seems.

WHAT I LOVED.
So the first half of this book I LOVED! I was having a great time! Farway the boy without a birthday and your typical egotistical lead, is on track to be one of the greatest time-travelers ever BUT UH OH. Something goes wrong during his final exam! His final exam is Marie Antoinette at Versailles, by the way, and for some reason I just find that to be absolutely delightful.

He fails his exam and turns to a life of crime, TIME CRIME! IT’S THE DREAM!

And then we’re zipping around through time, we’re stealing shit! We’ve got a loyal and lovable crew of people, with an adorable red panda that snatches wigs and hey hey look at that, we’re stealing shit off of the Titanic! Then a cool bald chick shows up! Her name is Eliot and she throws the team for a loop cus she outsmarts Far, a BUNCH! AND IT’S GREAT!
IT COULD HAVE BEEN JUST THIS.
THIS COULD HAVE BEEN THE WHOLE BOOK.

It wasn’t.

WHAT WAS MEH.
I LOVE HEIST STORIES.
I LOVE TIME TRAVEL!
I feel like whole life is just me searching for the perfect time travel heist story!
This uh…wasn’t that.

Once you find out what the “THING” is, the fun train just screeches to a full and complete stop. There is an excessively long chapter that’s just all long case file numbers and needlessly complicated exposition. Maybe it was because I did the audiobook but for the life of me I don’t understand the logic of the “THING”.

I am so disappointed because we were doing EXACTLY THE THING I WANT TO DO. Time travel crime! And then we just…stop and it’s just “WHELP. OKAY I GUESS WE’RE DOING THIS OTHER THING NOW.”
*SIGH* I guess I the search for the perfect time travel heist story CONTINUES.

I also think that it was lacking some character development. The team starts out super cool with a lot of great potential but they all end up going pretty much nowhere. A lot of Far’s development is placed on his relationship with Priya but they don’t actually have an arc as individuals, nobody does. The characters who really get shafted though are Imogen, Far’s cousin, and Gram, a really generic periphery character.

I also DO NOT like when the narrator is keeping secrets from me. Like I’m in you’re head dude, why you keeping secrets in your own head? If you don’t want us to know what a certain character knows then just don’t give us their POV maybe!? RIGHT? ISN’T THAT A GREAT SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM YOU HAVE INVENTED? Am I the only one who feels this way?

FICTIONAL HOTTIES
It wasn’t really THAT kind of book with a Hottie McHotFace, but I liked Far well enough. I think he was right on the edge of being a total shithead but his relationship with Priya does the most in giving him a personality. And of course as always having his crew love him, but it’s because he’s in this really sweet relationship that a lot of the things about him that would be so obnoxious are softened.

SPOILERY BITS!
Highlight to read this section.
So how this whole thing ended was pretty cool, with the double team members, two moms etc. But also like…I DON’T KNOW WHY THAT HAPPENED? It was so complicated and whatever that I ended up not understanding it at ALL. The past got eaten up but only up to one point? And then the rest of the void places got…spit back out? I don’t know. Don’t ask me. I have no idea.

Plus I think it’s super funny the lengths they went to to prevent anyone from trying to ship Far with Eliot. They really just head that off at the pass any possibility of that being a love connection before we find out who she is.

I will say though that the end for Priya and Far is heartbreaking and then adorable.

WORTH THE READ?
I mean…meh. I guess. But just know it’s NOT REALLY about using time travel to steal stuff, even though it SHOULD BE.
