BOOK SUMMARY FROM GOODREADS

Reeling from the latest attack by a mysterious enemy, the Quatra Fleet Academy is finally admitting students from every planet in the solar system after centuries of exclusivity.

Hotshot pilot Vesper, an ambitious Tridian citizen, dreams of becoming a captain – but when she loses her spot to a brilliant, wisecracking boy from the wrong side of the asteroid belt, it makes her question everything she thought she knew. Growing up on the toxic planet Deva, Cormak will take any chance he can get to escape his dead-end life and join the Academy – even if he has to steal someone’s identity to do it. Arran was always considered an outsider on icy Chetire, always dreaming of something more than a life working in the mines. Now an incoming cadet, Arran is looking for a place to belong – he just never thought that place would be in the arms of a Tridian boy. And Orelia is hiding a dark secret – she’s infiltrated the Academy to complete a mission, one that threatens the security of everyone there. But if anyone finds out who she really is, it’ll be her life on the line.

These cadets will have to put their differences aside and become a team to defend their world from a cunning enemy – but the danger might be lurking closer to home than they think…

WHAT I LOVED.

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK!

Hello! Are you looking for a mismatch of cadets thrown together by chance and need to depend on each other to thrive and survive in SPACE?! YOU ARE?! ENTER LIGHT YEARS. It’s fun and sassy and I’m having a great time!

LET’S MEET THE BABES:

  • Vesper: Just a girl trying to impress her mother and prove she belongs at the academy. She’s brilliant, she’s privileged, she’s ambitious, but she’s kind and hardworking and honest to god she just needs a hug!
  • Cormak: Not all the swagger he pretends to be! Precious boy who I was fully prepared to roll my eyes at but damnit if I can’t be won over by a sass monster in uniform! He very much reminded me of James Tiberius Kirk.
  • Arran: Not to be dramatic but I would set this whole building on fire for Arran. Sweet nerdy boy who just has a crush on a boy, but can’t believe anyone would actually like him back!
  • Orelia: Orelia is…..fine.

Me: I love all my children equally
*early that day* I don’t care for Orelia.

I’ll get into my Orelia business in the MEH section below.

I can’t let this review go by without giving a special shout out to the little helper device everyone has. It’s supposed monitor their health and help them get around and stuff was cracking me up because it reminded me of that Microsoft Word Paperclip that was NEVER HELPFUL and just SAYING OBNOXIOUS THINGS. Whenever it announces their heartbeats, or refuses to give them directions or suggests they go lay down I DIE. Honestly bring that Word Paperclip back! Maybe that’s when everything started going to trash – when we got rid of the PAPERCLIP.

I am no longer going to give kudos to authors for including diversity in their books, because uhm…that should be standard???? Like why I gotta congratulate you for something you should be doing ANYWAY. That being said the world is naturally diverse and it feels great to be in!

Morgans writing style is light and I thought I’d be bothered by how quick and superficial it goes. While you get a good sense of each of the characters, you don’t really dig into them too much. There aren’t a lot of plot points either, just these four characters navigating their time at the academy. I knew enough about everyone to care about them, and got sucked in super quick! Light Years was the exact Babes-In-Space adventure I was looking for!
AND a cliffhanger that while simple really blows the whole story open!

WHAT WAS MEH.

So my deal with Orelia is twofold.
FIRST OF ALL. She’s chosen for this REALLY IMPORTANT MISSION and then she’s just such a crap spy! Girl has absolutely zero chill. Sweating all over the place, acting suspicious etc. etc. etc. If you are looking for infiltrators isn’t that exactly who you would suspect?! The sketchy person who is always by themselves and roaming around in restricted areas?! PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER ORELIA.

SECONDLY and most importantly – the older I get the more creeped out I am by the Student/Teacher relationships. I do think they can be done properly!! I AM NOT SAYING IT IS ALWAYS TERRIBLE! but because of the how quickly we need to get to know these characters, it never felt like a proper genuine attraction. The insta-attraction aspect when it’s student/teacher lends more to “this old guy just wants to bone a teenager” and that’s…gross.

I KNOWWWW the teacher (whose name I’ve already forgotten HOW ON BRAND FOR ME) isn’t an “old guy” and he’s only a few years older than her (and she’s lying about her age so Orelia is actually older than he thinks…HE DON’T KNOW THAT THOUGH) BUT! HE👏🏽IS👏🏽HER👏🏽TEACHER👏🏽.

FICTIONAL HOTTIES

So who ISN’T a hottie in this one?! THEY ALL HOTTIES.
Vesper? TYPE-A HOTTIE
Cormak? HOTTIE FROM THE WRONG-SIDE OF THE ASTEROID BELT
Aaron? DORKY HOTTIE
The Guy Aaron Likes? HOTTIE WHOSE NAME I DON’T REMEMBER
Orelia? SLIGHTLY ANNOYING HOTTIE I GUESS
The Creep Teacher Guy? YES EVEN THIS GUY HOTTIE
WE GOT HOTTIES FOR EVERYONE AND EVERYONE A HOTTIE so come on down to Light Years! Don’t wait! HOTTIES NOW!

SPOILERY BITS!
(Highlight to read this section.)

SO LET’S TALK THAT CLIFFHANGER – because it was at that moment, when Teacher Dude turns on Orelia and takes her into custody that I was like O DANG ZADDY OKAY I SEE. And I am terrified and aroused and what does that say about ME AS A PERSON (don’t @ me I don’t need to know)
It blows their whole relationship wide open though.
Did he know the whole time?
Did he SUSPECT the whole time?
Was HE using HER?
It makes their relationship infinitely more palatable and I can’t wait to see what happens there. ( I mean I still wish Orelia was more interesting but whatever)

Look the stuff about Arran and how he was bullied when he was younger BROKE MY RUSTED ‘OL HEART BUCKET and so basically I would do anything to protect him from having to go through that pain ever. EVER AGAIN!

Cormak and Vesper FINALLY getting together and still being as sassy as ever! I feel so seen. I adore those two.

The big battle isn’t anti-climatic per-say….because it fits in the style of the rest of the book. But it’s over just as quickly as it starts. I’d love to sit with these characters just for a moment and allow them to process everything that’s happened to them.

WORTH THE READ?

YES YES YES! I couldn’t WAIT to get my hands on this the second I heard about it! Although, if I hadn’t been in desperate need for zippy space romps I might have waited for the entire series to be published before I dived in. This is such a quick read and 10000% the type of book you’d forget the entire plot of like a day later. I SUPER enjoyed it though!!! For some reason GoodReads seems to think the sequel is coming out IN FEBRUARY?! I don’t see how that could be true but I HOPE IT IS!

IF YOU LIKED THIS YOU MIGHT LIKE…

So I am ALWAYS looking for YA Sci-Fi books with this vibe. If you have any recommendations PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give them to me! For now, if you liked this and you want more space delights (aka NOT. RIP. YOUR. HEART. OUT. SPACE. PAIN.) you’ll probably also enjoy….

    1. This was my first adventure in her books! I love the show for The 100, but I know it’s completely different from the books. I’ve been thinking about reading them after this because I really enjoyed it!!
