Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Need To Be A Movie

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week is a different theme for bloggers to post their Top Ten.

This week’s theme is technically Upcoming Releases I’m On the Fence About BUT I’m gonna use an older prompt from Bionic Book Worm‘s Top Five Tuesday, because I had major FOMO about missing it!

Top Ten Books That NEED To Be Movies (Or TV Shows)

1. Unearthed
by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

This series is so much fun and LUCKY FOR ME it’s already in development! It currently has Doug Liman attached to it (Edge of Tomorrow, Mr. & Mrs. Smith), and if he takes it all the way through production I’m gonna be so happy!!!! I finished Undying a few days ago and can confidently say that the world needs Movie Jules Addison. IT’S WHAT WE DESERVE.

2. The Illuminae Files
by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

These books are something else! Badass space antics aside, they get really scary in some parts. Like really chilled to the bone kind of horrifying and WOW WOULD I LOVE TO SEE THAT ON SCREEN 😂. Also I’d like to see all the creative ways they could sneak in the alt format of the book into a movie. But most importantly I just want to see my babes being fierce and young and kicking ass!

3. The Lunar Chronicles
by Marissa Meyer

IT’S FAIRY TALES IN SPACE. Is it clear that I need ALL THE YA IN SPACE MOVIES?! WE NEED ALL THE SPACE ADVENTURES. Plus like The Illuminae Files, they introduce a new protagonist with every book and I think that build would be incredible on screen.

4. Throne of Glass
by Sarah J. Maas

I am so scared/excited because Hulu already has this in development and please god do not let them ruin this. BUT IF THEY DO IT RIGHT IT’S GONNA BE SUCH A BANGER. Like imagine seeing those epic scenes from KOA play out on screen!!!!!! I just need it to not get cancelled before we get to Rowan and yeah that would be great thank you.

5. Daughter of the Pirate King
by Tricia Levenseller

I’m not saying I want this strictly because of Riden…but I’m also not NOT saying that. COME ON. Sassy Lady Pirates are so in this season, and if I can’t have more books I should be able to have six seasons and a movie! It’s the LEAST you can do.

6. Monstrous Regiment
by Terry Pratchett

This is probably one of the safest Discworld books to make into a movie because it’s pretty self contained. Polly Perks goes all Mulan, chopping off her hair and pretends to be a boy to join the army and find her brother. It’s so very funny and blazingly feminist! One of my favorite books in middle school and honestly I’m probably due for a re-read!

7. Firebird Trilogy
by Claudia Gray

This series screams CW show and IDK what they’re doing with their lives where they haven’t already done it. There’s ANGST. There’s BOY FIGHTS. There’s GLAMOROUS RUSSIAN ROYALS and there’s SOME SERIOUSLY QUESTIONABLE MORALS. Seriously what else do they want?!

8. Vampire Academy
by Richelle Mead

We deserve another shot here. The movie was a MESS but Zoey Deutch was such a great Rose Hathaway and gave us a glimpse of what we could have had. WHAT WE DESERVEEEEEEE. Just give it to me, I’ll do it.

9. ANIMORPHS
by K.A. Applegate

REBOOT THE ANIMORPHS TV SHOW YOU COWARDS! And it should be just as dark and horrifying as the books were. But also make Tobias a freaking hottie because WOW was I in love with that Red-Tailed Hawk boy as a child.

10. Any Tamora Pierce Book

I’m partial to Circle of Magic series because those are the first ones I read. The magic system is SO cinematic, it would be GORGEOUS! Though I know she’s talked about how hard it would be to do any movie adaptations because of how interconnected her books are. But maybe we do a Netflix tv show and it’s beautiful and we’re all happy!

What books would you LOVE to see an adaptation of?
Are there any that you would HATE to see made into a Movie/TV Show?

  1. I haven’t read the Lunar books (YET!), but hear they’re amazing. Nonetheless, the concept does sound as if it’d be PERFECT on the big (or small) screen. 🙂

    1. I just feel like there are so many cool ways they could tell that story visually! There are so many characters, and all the moon stuff and diversity stuff just!!!!! HOW COOL WOULD IT BE.

    1. I’m so mad because I feel like ever since Cutthroat Island it feels like maybe studios are afraid to touch any “girl pirate” story but HELLOOOO. it’s all I want. WE DESERVE MORE LADY PIRATE STORIES.

  2. Throne of Glass is supposed to be in the works of becoming a tv show, but I haven’t heard much else about it for quite some time. I hope it comes true! I would also really like a tv show (or movie) of the Firebird trilogy! Loved those books!

I would love to see a Grisha trilogy tv show, and Daughter of Smoke and Bone tv show!

    1. I know they had written the pilot at least and it’s already acquired by Hulu but I need an update ASAP on what is going on with it!
Lucky you’re gonna get your Grisha tv show!! I just need to read the books before it comes out!

  3. I know that the rides for the lunar Chronicles have been sold already, but actually I’m pretty scared if they make this into something for the big screen. This can go so wrong and this series is one of my favourites. Yes, I’m also scared for throne of glass, and it’s a bummer that we can’t see it outside the US. If it’s on Hulu.

    1. DID THEY?! I had no idea the rights went out, but that doesn’t surprise me. It’s scary when any of our fav books get adapted because I feel like they basically NEVER get it right. It’s still fun to see them try though? At least I always think so 😂it keeps the fandom alive.

Oh no! I didn’t even think about that, hopefully if it does well though they’ll find a way to distribute TOG outside the US!

  4. It would take quite a talent to adapt The Illuminae Files to a screenplay because of its unique format. Some of these (like Throne of Glass) would take a while to do since they are so long. So much to ruin too.

    1. I feel like if the RIGHT PERSON were to take these on they could be incredible. They’d need the budget for it obviously. It’s so scary when anything gets taken for adaptation, and especially when they are big series with a lot of backstory and canon to get through.
But what if we ended up with something on par with game of thrones?! LIKE?! CAN YOU IMAGINE.

    1. You know I was just looking into it because I was surprised nothing had been adapted of hers yet and apparently she said that it’s hard to make them into movies because they’re so interconnected and nobody wants to buy anything because of it?? So sad but I hope someone picks one ’em soon!
